light brown sugar (packed): 1 cup
all-purpose flour (unsifted): 1 cup
ground cinnamon: 2 tsp
salted butter: 0.25 lb (or margarine)
granny smith apples: 6 (2 to 2 1/2 pounds)

You can substitute Anjou or Bartlett pears for the apples.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Lightly grease a 9-inch square baking pan; set aside.
In a small bowl, stir together sugar, flour, and 1 teaspoon of the cinnamon. Cut in butter with a pastry blender until mixture is crumbly; set aside.
Peel and core apples; slice thinly into pan. Sprinkle with the remaining teaspoon of cinnamon, lemon juice, and lemon peel; toss to coat apples, then spread them out in pan. Sprinkle crumb mixture evenly over apples.
Bake, uncovered, for 50-60 minutes or until apples are fork-tender and top crust is browned and crisp. Let cool for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Top with vanilla ice cream if desired.
