The oven must be preheated to 375 degrees F.

Cream the butter, which MUST BE SOFT and the sugar.

Stir in the egg, molasses and vinegar; beat well.

Shift dry ingredients. (the flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon and cloves); stir them into the wet ingrdients.

Chill the dough for 3 hours or overnight.

After the 3 hours or the next day, on a floured surface, roll the dough to 1/8 of an inch thick. (or as close to that as you can, just make sure that they are the same thickness so that they will bake evenly).

Cut into shapes and place 1 inch apart on a greased baking sheet.

At this point you can decorate the cookies with candy, raisins, nuts and colored sugars if you want.

Bake at 375 degrees F for about 6 minutes.

Cool slightly; remove cookies from cookie sheet and cool them on a rack or an unfolded brown paper bag.
